We are pleased to announce that we are partnering with the Hunger Coalition, a service of the Columbia County Community Connection, to meet a great, yet little known need in our area. There are between 15-40 students in each of our elementary and middle schools who experience hunger on a weekly basis. In fact, according to Hunger Coalition director Pat Grice, one in six students experiences hunger. This is a tragic statistic given the affluence of our nation, and our county in particular.
Pat spoke to our Towne Center Life Group this week, and after hearing how she and her volunteers“The Least of These” Project was born to do our part. We have agreed to adopt Lewiston Elementary School. Beginning immediately, we will provide 18 “weekend backpacks” each week to be given to students the shcool identifies as being in need. The backpack sustains the student over the weekend by providing breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
It is incredibly easy to help support this mission effort. The cost to assemble one backpack is $5 per week. The total cost to support the entire school for a month is $360. For the sake of consistency, once per month the items will be purchased in bulk and packs assembled at the home of Jim and Jane Pilgrim.
If you would like to join us in this effort to feed hungry children in our area, you can make a monthly donation online by following the link and selecting “The Least of These” fund. You are also welcome to help with packing and transporting the packs. Email the office for more information.
